Fixed bridges

Fixed bridge components:

Crowns (Abutments): These are the two parts that are attached to the natural teeth surrounding the space. These teeth are prepared by reducing their size to fit the crowns that will hold the bridge.

Artificial tooth (Pondyle): This is placed between the crowns and acts as a replacement for the missing tooth. This part is designed to look and act like natural teeth.

Types of fixed bridges:

Traditional Bridges:

The most common type.
Requires natural teeth on either side of the space.
Crowns are used to hold the bridge in place.
Implant-Supported Bridges:
Used when the bridge needs to be supported by dental implants rather than natural teeth.
This type provides greater stability and longevity.
Adhesive Bridges (Maryland):
Consists of an artificial tooth with metal or ceramic wings that are attached to the back sides of the adjacent teeth.
Usually used for front teeth because they do not require significant modification of the adjacent teeth.
Less strong than traditional bridges.

Cantilever Bridges:

Used when there is only one tooth adjacent to the space.
The bridge is attached to only one tooth, which makes it less commonly used because of the potential for overloading of the supporting tooth.
